Standing Light
⌀20”x54”
2019

At the tail end of my lockdown in Providence, I started to sketch more and more until I was drawn to a design for a light. It had been at the same time I had found an interest in Noguchi’s Akari sculptures so I got hooked and started to plan the design to build when I returned home for the summer. I found myself spending hours researching the paper that was he used and where to find it, only to learn it cost an arm and a leg and, since I had never done this before, it would likely take countless tries. When I made it home, I decided to build the frame, run the wicker reed, and practice with rolls of paper towel from Costco (I tested all the brands I could get my hands on). It took time to land on the right glue consistency and tension until it finally worked. It then hit me that paper towel was the perfect material. It’s cheap, sturdy, quite beutifully embossed, and my western, mass-produced parallel to Noguchi’s delicate washi paper.
